Hey guys. I'm getting a laptop that has windows vista on it. I'm going to keep my xp machine as well. My question is what is the easieset and accessible way to install jaws on vista? I know I have went to the fs website and burned the latest version of jaws for vista but I know since it's a burnt cd the installation won't start automatically when I insert the cd. Have you guys installed jaws on vista by yourselves? or does this reuqire getting sighted assistants for the first time?
Thanks,
Troy
It might be easier to get someone sighted to help. I chose to do it the hard way and used Narrator until I could get the JAWS installer talking. To start Narrator in Vista, you'll have to press Windows key U to get to the Ease Of Access Center. Then press Alt N for Narrator. It takes a while, literally a minute or two, for Narrator to start up.
when you burned the disk that was a bad choice because you could have painfully downloaded the exe from the vista laptop onto the laptop. If you burned a disk, it will not boot automatically but you can create an 'autorun.inf' file. if you do this the format of the file will look like this
[AUTORUN]
open=filename.exe
replace filename with the exact name of the executable. open notepad and save that text as autorun.inf. As for sighted users being needed that is bs I've done it myself. if you go the autorun method, reburn the disk or add the file which ever it might be and boot the disk. hell, why not just get rid of vista and put xp back on there. It will save you all this hastle. it is not jaws/user friendly and is more bloated than anything I can think of.
I've heard for a good friend that is blind that Vista works great with Jaws 8. My advice is if your Jaws is legit call FS and ask them the best method. I'm sure everyone won't like Vista and some will love it, even among sighted people, but I believe I'd give it a try to learn if I liked it or not before dumping it completely.
And if autorun is disabled, you can then just type windows key plus r to get to the run dialogue, and then type "e:autorun.inf". Replace the letter at the beginning of that command with whatever letter your CD drive is.
Vista works perfectly fine with JAWS 8.
Yeah, I'm using Vista on a wireless Tosheba laptop with the latest version of JAWS 8. It'll have an talking installer, just like previous versions and builds of JAWS. You may find you'll need sighted help downloading it to the laptop though. I know I did when we first needed JAWS for this machine.

My friend was going to get a laptop with windows vista on it, but I was told that Jaws doesn't work with windows vista, only xp. I've got Jaws 5 on my laptop at the minute with windows xp, but I think it might be a bit hard to get one from the shop now, because they've all got windows vista on them.
Yeah, the majority of laptops and PCS will now have Vista on them, but there are still the odd few XP machines out there. Also, I'd upgrade JAWS if you're still using JAWS 5.0 now. It does not like IE7 at all.

I did have the demo version of Jaws 8.0, but then someone gavwe me the crack copy of Jaws 5.0, because they didn't have 8.0 at the time. My laptop is about 4 years od and works fine, apart from the fact that the old version of Jaws is abit annoying, but it works.
